The book has great characters and it is a fantastic story. Most of all, I had to know what caused Penny to “fall” because I didn’t want to believe that she jumped during a moment of despair. The Art of Falling touched on many topics including eating disorders, body image, chronic illness, friendships and death which made me feel so many emotions while reading. Once Penny is out of the hospital they remain friends and continue to enrich eachother’s lives. Both Angela and Marty have suffered a loss and can relate to Penny’s frustration over her inability to move, much less dance. After writing The Art of Falling, Craft decided to novelize the events of her. While Penny is in the hospital, she becomes friends with her roommate, Angela, and Marty, the man who found her.
